Sector visions. One shared future.

Lessons from 25 years of climate action

Over the past two and a half decades, the Carbon Trust has partnered with businesses, governments, financial institutions and philanthropies to address some of the world's most complex climate and energy challenges across sectors and regions.

While each faces distinct challenges, the factors that enable meaningful progress are remarkably consistent and interconnected.

Our sector visions and solutions hub brings these insights together to show how climate action can mitigate risks, strengthen resilience and create lasting prosperity. It focuses on public and private sectors that collectively account for a substantial share of global emissions, are deeply interconnected and present significant opportunities to accelerate decarbonisation. The hub currently features six sectors with more in development and launching soon.

Each vision examines the challenges and the practical, evidence-based solutions available. Viewed as a whole, they reveal how advances across industries, technologies and regions can deliver system-wide change at scale.

A moment of real opportunity

While the world has made material progress, we are still off track to meet climate goals. Global conflicts, geopolitical uncertainty and the growing impacts of climate change are creating new pressures for economies, ecosystems and communities. Yet the conditions for faster and more widespread action have never been stronger.

In most countries today, clean energy is the most cost-effective source of electricity generation. Technologies such as battery storage, heat pumps, electric vehicles and low carbon industrial processes are rapidly moving from niche to mainstream. Businesses, cities and countries have committed to Net Zero targets covering most global emissions.

The technology and finance needed to accelerate the climate transition has never been more available. The challenge is no longer identifying solutions, but deploying, scaling and integrating them into the systems that underpin modern economies.

At the Carbon Trust, our mission is to accelerate the transition to a prosperous, resilient, low carbon future with deep sector expertise and cross-sector partnerships. Drawing on that experience, the sector visions highlight five common themes that turn ambition into impact.

Five lessons to accelerate climate action

1. A climate transition that fails people will fail full stop

Effective decarbonisation efforts improve lives, create opportunity and strengthen communities.

Whether supporting workers and livelihoods linked to carbon-intensive industries, expanding access to affordable and reliable energy, improving public health through cleaner energy systems or creating new economic opportunities, lasting progress depends on people experiencing tangible benefits from change. Put simply, a transition that fails people fails full stop.

2. Strategy turns ambition into investment and action

Targets alone do not deliver change. Without a clear strategy, ambition rarely turns into investment or action at scale. Effective transitions require clear priorities, robust evidence, practical delivery plans and investment-ready pathways.

Whether developing national energy transition plans, local authority decarbonisation strategies or corporate transformation roadmaps, organisations must translate long-term ambition into near-term action and investment. The gap between intention and implementation is where strategy matters most.

3. Solutions exist – it’s about scaling and adapting at pace

The transitions we describe are not waiting on scientific breakthroughs. Proven solutions are already delivering impact across sectors and regions. A few examples:

  • Distributed solar and mini-grids are providing affordable energy access across sub-Saharan Africa
  • Battery energy storage systems are improving grid flexibility and enabling greater deployment of renewable power
  • Heat pumps are helping public sector organisations decarbonise buildings while reducing energy costs
  • Methane-reducing feed additives are helping livestock producers lower emissions
  • Data centre operators are cutting emissions through a combination of renewable electricity, energy efficiency measures and innovative cooling technologies

The challenge is no longer whether solutions exist, but how quickly they can be scaled and adapted to evolving climate risks, market conditions and geopolitical realities.

4. Emerging economies will shape the next chapter of global growth

Many of the sector visions place emphasis on Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa. These regions are where the next wave of infrastructure, industry, food systems and finance is being built.

Malaysia’s data centre expansion, Indonesia’s coal transition, Chile’s copper mines, Mexico’s municipal energy programmes and Kenya’s distributed renewables are as decisive for the global transition as decisions taken in London, Brussels or Washington. These regions represent some of the world's greatest opportunities for innovation, investment and sustainable development. Supporting this growth through low-carbon pathways will be critical to strengthening resilience, enhancing competitiveness and enabling global prosperity.

5. Working together makes the impossible possible

The biggest transformations rarely happen through individual organisations acting alone. The greatest impact is achieved when businesses, governments, investors, researchers and communities collaborate on shared challenges and goals.

The Offshore Wind Accelerator is one example. By bringing together 17 developers to address common barriers, alongside government support and early-stage funding, the initiative helped save the industry £34bn against 2030 build-out targets. The success of this model has led to similar initiatives across sectors to include agriculture, telecommunications and digital infrastructure.

The next chapter

These sector visions are not separate stories but reflect a shared reality. The transition to a low-carbon economy is already underway and those that act now will be best placed to navigate the risks and opportunities ahead. While the scale of the challenge is significant, so too are the tools and solutions available to address it.

We welcome our clients, partners, funders and peers to explore the sector visions and join us in shaping the next 25 years.
